​What is a Quality Engineer?

A Quality Engineer is a professional who is responsible for testing and monitoring products or services to ensure they meet quality standards. They play a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing the quality of products or services before their release to customers. Quality Engineers work to identify and address quality issues, implement improvements, and ensure compliance with industry regulations and standards.

Duties of a Quality Engineer:

Lead quality improvement programs: Quality Engineers take the lead in implementing quality improvement initiatives using problem-solving and project management techniques. They identify areas for improvement, define quality goals, and work towards achieving them.

Customer interface and on-boarding: Quality Engineers regularly interface with customers to understand their requirements, address concerns or complaints, and ensure effective communication of corrective and preventive actions. They play a role in customer on-boarding processes, ensuring a smooth transition and alignment of quality requirements.

Management of customer documents: Quality Engineers are responsible for managing customer documents within the Quality system, such as drawings, purchase specifications, and quality agreements. They ensure the proper training and dissemination of relevant documents to personnel.

Drafting and approving quality documentation: They draft and approve quality documentation, such as Quality Specification Sheets (QSS), Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPAs), and Defect Libraries, to meet customer requirements and comply with quality standards.

Trending and tracking quality data: Quality Engineers analyze and track quality data to identify trends, patterns, and opportunities for quality improvements across the business. They use statistical tools and methodologies to analyse data and support decision-making.

Investigation of material/product issues: When material or product issues arise, Quality Engineers lead investigations to identify root causes and implement appropriate containment, corrective, and preventive actions. They ensure thorough investigations are conducted to prevent recurrence.

Adherence to incoming control requirements: Quality Engineers ensure adherence to incoming control requirements, which involve inspecting and verifying the quality of incoming materials or components. They also support the Supplier Corrective Action Request (SCAR) process when necessary.

Participation in validation activities: They participate in the review of validation protocols and reports to ensure quality compliance. Quality Engineers contribute their expertise to ensure that processes and systems meet regulatory requirements and quality standards.

Internal audits: Quality Engineers execute internal process and system audits to assess compliance with quality standards, procedures, and regulations. They identify areas of non-compliance, recommend corrective actions, and support their implementation.

Quality projects and continuous improvement: They manage quality projects that support continuous improvement efforts, such as Lean Projects. Quality Engineers work on cross-functional teams to drive process improvements, reduce waste, and enhance efficiency.

Change management and customer interaction: Quality Engineers coordinate activities associated with change management, ensuring that changes are properly documented, assessed for quality impact, and implemented effectively. They also interact with customers to address quality-related inquiries or issues.

Timely resolution of quality issues: Quality Engineers ensure the timely and effective closure of day-to-day quality issues, addressing them promptly to minimize impact on operations and customer satisfaction.

Collaboration with other departments: They interface with other departments on a daily basis, collaborating with cross-functional teams to address quality-related matters and ensure alignment in quality processes and goals.

Batch paperwork review and release: Quality Engineers review batch paperwork, which includes documentation related to the manufacturing process, to verify its accuracy and compliance. They make the final decision to release the product for shipment.

Analysis and reporting of key measures: They analyse and report key quality measures, such as Process Performance Indices (Ppk), Capability Performance Indices (Cpk), Cost of Quality, Customer Complaints, and internal/external quality results. This data helps identify areas for improvement and monitor overall quality performance.

Coach and drive a culture of compliance and continuous improvement: Quality Engineers promote a culture of compliance and continuous improvement within the organization. They provide coaching, training, and guidance to promote quality awareness and engagement among employees.

Compliance to regulations and policies: Quality Engineers ensure compliance with environmental, health, and safety requirements, as well as company policies, procedures, and corporate policies. They stay updated on relevant regulations and standards to ensure adherence.

Additional duties: They may perform additional duties as requested by their direct supervisor, such as participating in special projects or supporting specific initiatives.
