Job description

Our client, based in London, is a building services and environmental engineering consultancy dedicated to developing innovative and sustainable engineering solutions. As a result of their continued success, they are expanding their management team to focus on growth in London and beyond and are looking to hire an experienced Associate (Energy & Sustainability).
As an Associate (Energy & Sustainability), you will play a pivotal role in driving sustainability initiatives, overseeing technical delivery, and managing key client relationships. You will lead a dynamic team, ensuring excellence in energy analysis, sustainability strategies, regulatory compliance, carbon reduction, net-zero, occupancy comfort, and building optimisation.
The ideal candidate will be a Chartered Engineer (CEng) with deep expertise in thermal analysis, energy strategy development, building optimisation, whole-life carbon assessment, and sustainable building design. Main Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Provide expert technical and project oversight of the Energy & Sustainability team, ensuring consistent high-quality project delivery.
  • Lead the production of all technical output within the Energy & Sustainability team, such as thermal analyses, energy strategies, net zero studies, sustainability strategies, overheating assessments, building physics assessments, microclimate assessments, CFD modelling, planning deliverables, building optimisation reporting, BREEAM delivery, WELL delivery, etc.
  • Oversee the development of staff and team, including mentoring, training, recruiting, expanding the team, etc.
  • Introduce new skills, certifications and services to the company, where appropriate and relevant.
  • Manage the London Energy & Sustainability team, overseeing resource planning and coordination with other offices (Dublin, Berlin, Belfast, Madrid, etc.).
  • Lead recruitment efforts to attract, develop, and retain top talent in the field.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning, ensuring the team remains at the forefront of industry advancements.
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to all team members as required.
  • Establish linkages between London and relevant third-level institutions and universities, allowing for technical partnerships and forming part of our recruitment strategy.
  • Present technical findings and sustainability strategies to clients, contractors, councils, and multidisciplinary design teams.
  • Conduct workshops and formal presentations to clients, helping bridge the gap between technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Engage in industry-wide discussions, representing the company at conferences, sustainability forums, and expert panels.
  • Establish key linkages between London and relevant steering groups and committees in the UK, such as UKGBC, CIBSE, BCO, Better Buildings Partnership, LETI, Carbon Trust, etc.
Previous Experience/Qualifications:
  • Educated to degree level with a minimum of 8 years’ industry experience in a similar field/industry.
  • Significant experience in Energy & Sustainable Design within an MEP design consultancy setting.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) with significant experience in Energy & Sustainability within an MEP design consultancy.
  • Expert knowledge in Tas or IES software for energy and thermal modelling.
  • Understanding of other software required to undertake the role, such as SAP software, OneClick LCA, etc.
  • Strong knowledge of UK sustainability standards, regulations, best practices, CIBSE codes, and planning policies.
  • Proven ability to produce typical planning stage energy and sustainability submissions across various sectors.
  • Knowledge of recognised certification systems such as BREEAM (NC/RFO), etc., including knowledge of relevant credits and assessment processes. This shall include knowledge of the assessment role, BREEAM AP role, and also experience in fulfilling particular BREEAM requirements such as ENE01, HEA03, etc.
  • Proficiency in overheating analysis (CIBSE TM59, TM52, Approved Document O).
  • Understanding of Whole Life Carbon, Embodied Carbon, and Circular Economy assessments.
  • Ability to manage and oversee multiple projects, ensuring high-quality delivery.
  • Experience in financial control, bidding, and business development.
Desirable:
  • Experience in microclimate analysis and CFD, including daylight and sunlight assessments, pedestrian wind comfort analysis, and occupant comfort modelling.
  • Knowledge of other relevant certification systems such as NABERS, HQM, WELL, and Passivhaus design principles.
  • Expertise in detailed fabric performance analysis, including thermal bridging assessments, condensation analysis, etc.
  • Experience in Post Occupancy Evaluation and building performance optimisation.
Additional Information:
  • Please note this is a full-time, permanent role, on-site in London. Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours per week with flexitime.
